The Laboratory Manager is a member of a multi-disciplinary team in the Student Health Center Medical Clinic, including primary care, gynecology, and specialty care. This position is accountable for the administration, technical, and personnel functions necessary for quality laboratory operations and management. The candidate should have a deep appreciation for the collaborative care model and advancing the divisional priorities of quality, access and inclusion, and mattering and belonging.
Job Responsibilities
45% Directs daily laboratory operations, ensuring quality and integrity. Oversees and performs specimen collection, conducts routine and special clinical laboratory tests, enters data and interprets results. Prepares reagents and performs preventative and corrective maintenance of equipment. Communicates appropriately with ordering providers.
20% Orients, supervises, develops and evaluates a staff of medical technologists, administrative coordinators and students. Trains clinical medical staff on laboratory practices. Collaborates with the Lab Director, other departmental unit heads and campus partners. Coordinates with the Louisiana Department of Health in the event of disease outbreaks/pandemics.
15% Establishes policies and procedures, including standards, normal values, and methods of control for all laboratory tests performed. Oversees process improvement initiatives and quality control program. Performs audits to identify possible risks and implements corrective and preventative actions. Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies and accrediting association.
15% Manages the laboratory budget. Purchases equipment and supplies. Understands and supports workflow related to sound billing and insurance practices. Responsible for establishing and maintaining contracts with reference laboratories, advocating for high quality, efficient and affordable laboratory services. Ensures appropriate specimen transfer, accurate ordering and timely resulting and reporting. Oversees the laboratory interface to ensure adequate ordering, reporting, billing and engages information technology staff as needed.
5% Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned, including at least 40 hours per year spent supporting broad divisional and institutional initiatives, such as Move-In Day, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, and other special events and projects.
Minimum Qualifications
A baccalaureate degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related field.
Three years as a medical technologist.
At least three years of related experience in management, leadership, or lead worker role.
Minimum Certifications/Licenses
CLS: CLS-LA Board of Medical Examiners License
ASCP or AMT: Registered ASCP or AMT
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science.
Five years as a medical technologist with three years as a laboratory supervisor.
Experience in a collaborative healthcare setting.
Special Requirements/Expectations
Due to the nature of the position and/or position responsibilities, this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.
May have to work occasional holidays, evenings and weekends.
In accordance with University Policy Statement 18, this position is considered essential and may be required to report or stay on campus in the event of an emergency or closure.
