Leadership Journey: A Continuous Self-Check
In last week's blog, we delved into the essential skills required to be an effective leader and the journey it takes to develop these skills. Like any journey, it's important to periodically check your progress and evaluate where you stand. Along your leadership journey, make it a habit to ask yourself some key questions to ensure you're on the right path.
Key Questions for Self-Assessment:
- Goal Achievement: Am I and my organization meeting our goals, or are we constantly changing them?
- Feedback Utilization: Am I accepting feedback and using it effectively?
- Openness to Innovation: Am I open to new ideas?
- Team Motivation: Is my team motivated? Do I truly understand their level of motivation?
- Task and Time Management: Am I overwhelmed with tasks and promises that I cannot possibly complete?
- Growth and Advancement: Are members of my organization continuing to grow and advance in their careers?
- Retention of Top Performers: Are my top performers staying, or are they leaving while poorer performers remain?
- Personal Connections: Do I know the people in my organization as individuals, not just as names on the org chart? Do I show that I care about them?
- Celebrating Success: Do I and my organization celebrate success and learn from setbacks?
These questions are not only for your self-reflection but also for seeking feedback from your team. Leadership is an ongoing journey, and it's unlikely you'll have a positive answer to every question all the time. Your personal assessment and the input from others will highlight areas that need improvement.
The workshops and presentations at ALMA 2024's Total Leadership Training Experience are designed to help leaders at all stages of their journey build their skills and address the gaps identified by these key questions. Additionally, the roundtable discussions and ample networking opportunities provide a platform to gain insights and ideas from peers who face similar challenges.
