A few years ago Jo Dohl of Amersham Healthcare gave a presentation at an ALMA conference on the need for your network to be promoted as you get promoted.  It doesn’t mean that you discount your former friends and peers, but you need to expand your contacts in line with your new responsibilities and new base of peers.

How about promoting your network to a new level?

Strive to talk to or meet a new person at least once a month.  Focus not only on people whose jobs are similar to yours, but expand outside of that box to interact with people who have very different responsibilities than you currently have.  Also, look outside of your company or organization.  Associations like ALMA are a great source to expand your network.  Your network can be a great ally on your career journey.  Grow it as you grow.
