All Geeks are Not the Same: Powerfully Engage with Diverse Styles
Have you ever spoken with someone, but it seems like they speak a different language? Sometimes what people hear seems entirely different from what you are saying. Identifying and understanding the differences in others is essential so you can adapt what you say and what you do to best engage your colleagues and clients.
In this hands-on, interactive workshop, you will understand your own strengths and tendencies as well as those of others, so you can powerfully engage with all the people you encounter.
- Learn what engages and inspires different types of people and why people communicate the way they do.
- Recognize how others hear your words and experience your actions.
- Understand your own preferences and strengths and see how to best use them.
- Learn how to expand your communication to powerfully impact different types of people.

Managing (Leading) an Academic Laboratory
Managing (Leading) an Academic Laboratory can be a rewarding experience, however, it can also be an arduous journey. During this workshop I will discuss my twenty-five year journey from the bench to laboratory management in an academic institution. We will take a deep dive into academic laboratory management from on-boarding new staff to interacting with faculty and Principal Investigators. This workshop will be part instructive and part interactive. At the conclusion of this workshop, the attendee will have a better understanding of what it takes to manage (Lead) an academic laboratory.

Next Level Leadership - Today's Leader
The different trends of leadership styles are constantly evolving but are not necessarily turning leaders into who they need to be to lead effectively in the 21st Century. The fact of the matter is that it is not who you are as a leader today that matters most but more so who you will become for the next level of success. In this workshop, we will define what type of leaders are needed to help navigate our country, businesses, and organizations successfully through all times no matter what conditions we face. This workshop will help you see the next level leader in you and give you the tools to become who you need to be at any given moment to lead effectively and successfully.

Implementing & Improving a Quality Management System
One of the most important tasks you have as a lab manager is to ensure that any data, products, or research generated by your lab is of consistent quality that you and your clients can be confident in.
However, operator error, equipment failure, inexperienced staff, and lack of documentation can keep you from achieving this. Having a Quality Management System (QMS) can help you identify human or equipment errors, train new staff thoroughly and consistently, and increase confidence in the accuracy of your data.
In this workshop, we will introduce QMS concepts for laboratory managers who do not currently fall under a formal QMS or would like to improve their current QMS processes. We will cover why having a QMS is important, how to create a system that is right for your lab size and activity, getting buy-in from supervisors, peers, and subordinates, common pitfalls and how to avoid them and provide resources to get you started when you return to your lab.
Presenters - Javin Hatcherian, US Geological Survey and Amy Place, Grand River Aseptic Manufacturing

Management Essentials
In this hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves workshop, we go deep into the techniques for effective management and deconstruct your own management process. We explore ways in which to strengthen each of the four pillars of effective leadership - Purpose, Planning, People, and Process - through a series of frameworks and activities in communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, time management, delegation, feedback and criticism, conflict resolution, and managing up. Get ready to be busy, because this workshop demands high participation including brainstorming sessions, group discussions, and action plans.
