Job Details:
The School of Medicine on the Savannah, Georgia campus is searching for a Research Associate and Lab Manager.
Responsibilities:
LABORATORY MANAGER (50%FTE). The Laboratory Manager will spend 50% of their time working with the Chair of the department to perform duties related to managing and maintaining the research laboratory facilities on the Savannah campus of MUSM. The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for maintaining as well as ensuring proper and safe use of departmental equipment. In consultation with the Department Chair, the laboratory manager will help to monitor proper adherence to departmental policies regarding conducting research, use of resources, handling and disposal of research materials. In addition, the laboratory manger will monitor departmental usage of laboratory supplies, assist in ordering supplies and advising on current and future equipment needs. Laboratory maintenance, reagent preparation and ordering of equipment and supplies is expected. Supervision of students and providing guidance/direction to untrained staff is required. The laboratory manager is expected to work independently to advance the research program.
ELECTRON MICROSCOPE TECHNICIAN (30% FTE): The electron microscope technician will assist faculty with sample preparation, sample sectioning, and imaging. Must complete an extensive training program.
VIVARIUM Animal Caregiver (20% FTE): The vivarium caregiver will assist with day-to-day duties in the vivarium, including, but not limited to, assisting with animal care, preparing animal husbandry cages, changing animal cages, cleaning animal cages, ensuring cleanliness of the facility, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment. The vivarium animal caregiver is expected to work collaboratively with the animal facility team.
Qualifications:
A master’s degree in a related field and two years of experience in specialized laboratory techniques OR a bachelor’s degree in an appropriately related field and four years of specific advanced research/laboratory techniques are required. Training to perform experiments involving preparation of samples for electron and confocal microscopy will be provided.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Has advanced molecular biology proficiencies in PCR, DNA and protein purification and analysis.
• The candidate will be expected to function independently of the supervisor.
• Has knowledge and skills for advanced cell culture.
• Is proficient in light and fluorescent microscopy.
• Knows how to use biological and chemical formulae in calculations and in practice to prepare experimental reagents.
• Can competently operate research specific as well as standard laboratory equipment: Balances, pH meters, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, fluorometers, PCRs and electrophoresis equipment.
• Knows how to record information clearly and accurately in order to maintain laboratory notebooks.
• Has organizational and managerial skills to maintain the general order, cleanliness, and safety of the laboratory.
• Has the ability to repeatedly lift and carry up to 25 lbs. for periods of one or two hours with or without reasonable accommodation in order to load cases of lab supplies on storage shelves and to move distilled water/buffer containers.
• Has computer skills to enter data, maintain protocol manuals, conduct literature and internet searches. Is familiar with and can organize data analysis with NCBI, Expasy, GraphPad Prism, Gen 5, Word, Power Point and Excel.
