What Is Leadership and Can Anyone Become a Leader?
We've all heard it before: "He or she is a born leader." However, leaders are not born; they learn, practice, adapt, develop, and implement the skills that define a leader. Anyone can learn these skills if they are willing to invest the time and effort to refine and apply them. For some, it may come more naturally than for others.
The primary focus of leadership is people, which can be very different from our roles as scientists. Leaders point the direction, but they also facilitate the achievement of goals. Effective leaders:
- Excel at communication, including listening
- Show personal vulnerability by admitting mistakes and shortcomings and learning from them
- Have empathy towards others
- Establish an environment of trust
- Are decisive
- Influence and motivate others
- Are effective at negotiation
- Teach and coach others to be their best and grow
- Genuinely show they care about people
ALMA's mission is to help laboratory managers become better leaders. Think about how you lead,or would like to lead your team. Do you have the skills noted above? Do you seek out ways to improve your leadership skills? One of the hallmarks of ALMA is our annual conference. It's a great way to evaluate and improve your leadership skills. This year, we are fortunate to have Professor Sam Sitkin, one of the creators of the Six Domains of Leadership, present a workshop at ALMA2024.
Professor Sim Sitkin, Director of the Behavioral Science and Policy Center at Duke University, will present a half-day workshop, "The Six Domains of Leadership," that provides a framework for understanding and learning the aspects of leadership. The workshop will cover:
- Personal Leadership: Understanding your values, strengths, and weaknesses
- Relational Leadership: Building connections with others through communication, empathy, and trust
- Contextual Leadership: Adapting your leadership approach as required
- Inspirational Leadership: Motivating and inspiring others
- Supportive Leadership: Facilitating the abilities, growth, and success of others
- Responsible Leadership: Considering the impact of decisions, taking responsibility, and thinking long-term
Professor Sitkin will demonstrate the connectivity of the six domains in achieving effective leadership. Leadership is a journey of learning. Take that journey at ALMA 2024's Total Leadership Training Experience.
